HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 20 (ACN) The Second Secretary of the Cuban Mission to the United Nations, Lillianne Sanchez Rodriguez reaffirmed on Tuesday the validity of the plan against arms trafficking.
The statement came during a speech before the preparatory committee of the Conference to Examine the Action Program to prevent, fight and eliminate the illicit activity, according to the Cubaminrex website.
Sanchez Rodriguez recognized that the illicit trafficking of small and light weapons in all its aspects continues to be a sensitive issue in the world and an issue of great international concern due to its consequences.
She highlighted that the prevention, confrontation and eradication of the problem in the world requires the effort of the international community under the auspices of the United Nations.
The Cuban diplomat reaffirmed the importance of the committment that has been assumed to respect the objectives and principles of the UN Charter in addition to the inherent right to legitimate defense.
Article 51 of the UN Charter establishes the sovereign right of all States to acquire, produce, export, import and conserve conventional weapons for its legitimate defense and needs to security.
The diplomat took the opportunity to inform on the legislative measures and actions adopted by Cuba to comply with what is established in the Action Program preventing the illicit trafficking of arms in the country.
