The United States Abstains in Voting against the Blockade

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 26 (acn) The ambassador of the United States at the United Nations, Samantha Power, announced that her country would abstain in the voting against the resolution that demands to put an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States for over 59 years now.

In her speech at the United Nations General Assembly, the U.S. representative explained the reasons of the decision of the United States, which for 24 consecutive occasions has refused to acknowledge the demand of the world so the unilateral siege against the island is lifted.
The announcement was welcomed with applause by participants in the session, preceded by the explanation of the diplomat, who asserted that for more than 50 years the objective of the United States of isolating Cuba has not been achieved; "on the contrary, as shown by voting at the UN, the isolated one has been the United States."
The official admitted that the harassment of her country should be eliminated not only because of the successive voting in that regard at the UN, but also for the announcement of President Barack Obama of December, 2014, of reestablishing diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Abstaining in this resolution does not mean that the United States agrees with all policies applied by Cuba, she pointed out, while acknowledging that in the history of the two countries there are also "reasons to have contact with each other and we recognize the areas in which the Cuban government has had many successes."
She reiterated that the current administration maintains its new strategy of projects towards the Cuban people and even warned that "they still have a lot to do in the Cuban nation."
The United States believes that we can do a lot together with Cuba to face global challenges, among other things, here at the United Nations, she said, and referred to the medical aid sent by the island to West Africa to fight the Ebola virus epidemic that devastated countries of that region.
The diplomat asserted that the two nations should continue talks, and stated that on this day "we have taken little steps to achieve it; let's hope there are many more in the future and we even expect the end of the U.S. embargo once and for all.
