Havana, June 3 (ACN) The representative of the UN Population Fund, Arie Hoekman in Mexico and Country Director for Cuba and the Dominican Republic praised in Havana the recent 7th Communist Party Congress whose members discussed the demographic challenges and aging of the population in the country.
After taking over his post from 2005 to 2009, Hoekman has once again been named to the same position and in small welcoming event with the participation of the Cuban entities, he was congratulated and thanked Cuba for their cooperation with the UN Population Fund for over 40 years.
The diplomat was grateful for the participation and advances of the Caribbean island in issues like sexual and reproductive health, sex education and the prevention of HIV/Aids, training in gender issues, prevention of family violence and the development of demographic research and children, teenagers and youth among others.
He said there is a Country Program for 2014-2018 period directed at carrying out projects in these areas not only responding to national priorities and the Cuban State's economic and social policies, but adjusting to the priorities of Assistance of the UN Development Program.
In statements to the press, Hoekman said how valuable it is for the population to discuss the agreements of the Party Congress in these and other fields in order for the sectors involved to have a better idea and are protagonist of the public policies.
He considered that more than a social problem, the aging population should be a reason of celebration as not all of the country's inhabitants reach such ages, above all with health and that is why it's important to education the young people in order for them to contribute in supporting and caring for their ancestors.
