HAVANA, Cuba, May 31 (acn) Guyana´s Ambassador to Cuba Halim Majeed stressed on Monday in Havana the importance that the upcoming Summit of Caribbean States addresses common positions regarding climate change for the region´s countries.
The diplomat highlighted the need to create financial mechanisms for projects aimed at minimizing the impact of climate change in the region during the 7th edition of the Summit.
According to Majeed, these issues will be discussed in the preparatory meeting of representatives and Ministers prior to the high level segment of the Summit and he expects these issues will be included in the final declaration.
The Guyanese President David Granger will participate in the Summit, said the ambassador during a conference at the Institute of Friendships of the Peoples, ICAP on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the independence of the Caribbean island.
Guyana is one of the 25 member states of the Association of Caribbean States whose Constitutive Agreement was signed on July 24th 1994 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia with the objective of promoting consultation, cooperation and action plan among the Caribbean region.
Regarding its relations with Cuba, the Guyanese ambassador praised the indestructible and lasting relations between the two nations which established diplomatic ties in 1972.
She also highlighted her admiration for the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro who she described as a great man and visionary leader and thanked Cuba´s solidarity with her country through the training of hundreds of Guyanese professionals.
Majeed also recalled that the two peoples share a painful chapter in history which was the bombing of a Cubana Airlines plane by ultra-right wing Cuban Americans over Barbados killing 73 people on board in 1976 among them the Cuban fencing team and Guyanese students that were studying in Cuba.
