HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 21 (acn) The Basque Parliament asked the United States on Thursday to lift the blockade imposed on Cuba for over half a century, according to the clamor of the international community, reported Prensa Latina.
In a statement, the legislative body of the Spanish autonomous region of the Basque Country recalled the support received by the Caribbean island at the United Nations General Assembly, where 191 of its 193 member countries demanded in 2015 to the U.S. the end of that economic, commercial and financial siege.
This is a convincing expression that all governments and peoples of the world demand the lifting of that siege, and the Basque Parliament wants to join this demand due to the closeness and fraternal ties that unite us with the Cuban people, stressed the declaration adopted by unanimity.
It also welcomed the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Washington and Havana, crystallized with the recent visit of President Barack Obama to the island, as well as agreements of political dialogue and cooperation of the European Union and Cuba.
The autonomous legislative body considered that these developments in the international arena must have as corollary the cessation of that unilateral policy by the U.S. Congress, in line with the aforementioned resolution adopted by the UN.
All these events leave room for hope in the way of achieving a world free of wars, in which peace, fraternity, solidarity and democracy govern relationship between peoples, reads the text.
The Basque Country's statement is the second official statement approved by a parliament of an autonomous community of Spain in favor of the lifting of the blockade, after the one adopted on April 13 by the legislature of Galicia, also by unanimous vote.
The ceremony of the Novel International University Poetry Prize, held last night, was attended by the cultural counselor of the Cuban Embassy to Spain, Natasha Diaz-Arguelles.
