HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 19 (acn) The people of Lampedusa received on Sunday the Miracle Cross given as a gift from Cuba to Pope Francisco who donated the sculpture to the Italian island, one of the sites hardest hit by the migratory crisis affecting Europe, reported the La Sicilia daily.
During the arrival of the sculpture, Cardinal Francisco Montenegro said that the gift from Cuban President Raul Castro to Pope Francisco in September of 2015 during his official visit to the Caribbean island, the Pontiff recognized those that give refuge and hospitality, according to a report from Prensa Latina News Agency dated in Rome.
During the mass offered Sunday morning on the occasion of the World Migration and Refuge Day, the Archbishop of Agrigento highlighted the value of the sculpture of Cuban artist Alexis Leyva (Kcho) representing a Christ in a cross with rowing pallets. The Cardinal characterized the sculpture as a beautiful inspiration with a particular value, a wooden sculpture named Christ of the Mediterranean, fishermen and immigrants reported the source.
Lampedusa, the largest island in the Pelageanarchipelago in the Mediterranean Sea is located 205 kilometers southwest of Sicily, midway between Italy, Tunis and Libya and destination for many immigrants that leave northern Africa thousands of which died last year attempting to reach the European coast.
