HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 24 (acn) The foreign ministers of Central American countries are meeting Tuesday in El Salvador to address the situation of over 25 thousand Cubans stranded in Costa Rica in their attempt to emigrate to the United States.
The meeting which will reportedly not call the media, will include the foreign ministers of El Salvador, which temporarily chairs the Central American Integration System; Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize, Panama and the Dominican Republic; while Cuba, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico have been invited to the forum.
El Salvador´s foreign minister Hugo Martinez said that the meeting will try to find not only a short-term solution to the Cubans, but also to solve the situation in the mid and long run, PL news agency reported.
The ministers will also consider the issue of illegal migration in general, which is a problem affecting all Central American countries.
A statement by the Cuban Foreign Ministry last Tuesday explained that the Cubans who are now in Costa Rica left their country legally in route to different Latin American countries and in tune with all migration regulations established in Cuba.
In the attempt to reach US territory, they became the victims of traffickers and criminal gangs, which unscrupulously benefit by controlling the passage of migrants through South and Central America and Mexico, the statement explained.
The Cuban authorities keep in permanent contact with the governments of the countries involved in the event to find a fast and appropriate solution, which includes the safety of all the Cuban citizens, the statement noted and explained that all those Cubans who have legally left the country and meet Cuban migration regulations have the right to return to the country if they wish to do so.
