HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 6 (acn) Cuba reiterated its commitment today in Paris with UNESCO and confidence in its management by making reality the dream of achieving societies characterized by legitimate sustainable development.
According to Prensa Latina news agency, the Cuban minister of Higher Education, Rodolfo Alarcon, said the island will remain committed to UNESCO and its founding principles.
The Organization must continue to lead the global debate on the role of culture as an essential element in the sustainable development of our nations, he said while speaking at the 38th General Conference of the institution in session until November 18.
This theme prominently figured on the agenda of the meeting of ECLAC Ministers of Culture, held in Havana on September, he noted.
Alarcon emphasized that UNESCO should play a leading role in the tireless fight against illiteracy, in promoting quality education for all throughout life.
He recalled that a few weeks ago the Heads of State and Government adopted at the United Nations General Assembly the Agenda for Development Post 2015.
Unfortunately, the modest commitments defined in 2000 as Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), were not met, he added.
Alarcón noted that Cuba not only met the MDGs, but also provided support and assistance to other developing countries.
This has been possible thanks to the political will of the government, the undisputed support of the people and their solidarity and internationalist vocation based on the principle of sharing the limited resources at its disposal, he stated.
The official stressed that the work of the Cuban Revolution is in full correspondence with the objectives of UNESCO. Throughout more than 50 years that sustained effort allowed providing our people a free, comprehensive and universal system of education and spreading culture and sports.
It has also been possible to develop a health system that exhibits high indicators and remarkably deploy scientific potentials, he added.
He also said that all this was achieved under the unjust and cruel blockade imposed by the US government, a policy that recently received a demonstration of overwhelming rejection of the international community at the United Nations General Assembly.
The Cuban minister referred to the Framework for Action for Education 2030 approved yesterday at a high-level meeting on the topic at UNESCO, and stressed that it reflects a shared and comprehensive vision towards an equitable education for all.
Cuba reiterates its commitment to the Latin American Laboratory for Assessment of Educational Quality and supports the preservation of the Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean, an organization called to promote and develop higher education in the region, he said.
