HAVANA, Cuba, May 29 (acn) The countdown to withdraw Cuba from the US list of countries sponsor of international terrorism is running in Washington as Friday marks the deadline for the Congress to issue a resolution that could oppose the presidential decision.
The withdrawal of the island from the US blacklist was notified to the Congress by President Barack Obama on April 14 and it is considered a crucial step for Havana and Washington to reestablish full diplomatic relations.
The US Congress had 45 days to issue a resolution opposing the executive decision, but that period of time will inevitably expire on Friday, and as US lawmakers are on a one-week vacation, no sessions underway, and a possible and emergent return to Washington by the legislators before midnight Friday to deal with the issue seems unlikely to happen.
Once the deadline expires, there is neither a chance that the formal publication of the measure on the Federal Register, the official federal daily, which would happen on Monday.
