HAVANA, Cuba, May 23 (acn) Salvadoran president Salvador Sanchez met on Friday afternoon with Cuban First Vice-president Miguel Diaz-Canel, who visited the country to participate in the beatification of Monsignor Oscar Arnulfo Romero.
After the meeting, held at Presidential Palace, Salvadoran Foreign Minister Hugo Martínez pointed said: "we took advantage of the opportunity to review preparations for the forthcoming official visit of President Sanchez to Cuba, and we addressed issues of bilateral cooperation," the Granma newspaper reported on Saturday.
Sanchez gave Díaz-Canel a painting with the image of Romero and welcomed the participation of the Cuban delegation in the ceremony of beatification.
The Cuban First Vice-president thanked the Salvadoran government for the invitation to participate in the activity organized by the Catholic Church, scheduled for May 23, in San Salvador.
Prior to this meeting, Diaz-Canel visited the crypt of Monsignor Romero and paid homage to the historic leader of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), Shafik Handal.
He thanked the people and government of the Central American fraternal nation for the warm reception received, upon his arrival to the country. He also conveyed "a warm message to the Salvadoran people on behalf of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, President Raul Castro, and the Cuban people."
Diaz-Canel pointed out that he was moved and grateful for the invitation to the ceremony of beatification of the man we know as the "voice of the voiceless," and "who left us a legacy of peace and struggle for the poor. We, Salvadorans and Cubans, have been feeding that legacy all these years in our common struggles" he underlined.
