HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 11 (acn) Cuban President Raul Castro reiterated his government's willingness to carry on with respectful dialog with the United States towards the reestablishment of diplomatic relations.
Speaking to all 35 heads of states and governments gathered at the 7th Panama Summit of the Americas, Raul Castro said he considered it a positive step the recent statements by US President Barack Obama about his decision to act fast about the removal of Cuba from the US blacklist of countries sponsors of international terrorism.
Raul said that the economic, commercial and financial blockade is still being fully enforced against the island causing damage and shortage to the Cuban people, while it is the main obstacle to the development of Cuban economy.
The blockade violates International Law and its extraterritorial reach affects the interests of other states, Raul pointed out.
However, he acknowledged Obama's personal involvement in debates to have the Congress lift the unilateral anti-Cuba measure imposed and maintained against the island by successive US administrations since 1962.
As a consequence of the blockade, 77 percent of Cubans were born under the rigor of that policy said Raul and noted that as long as the blockade is there we have to keep on with our fight.
Raul Castro said that Cuba will continue fully involved in the update of its economic model to improve its socialist system, advance towards development and defend the achievements Cubans have enjoyed for over half a century now.
