HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 28 (acn) The Group of 77 plus China asked the U.S. government on Tuesday to put an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba for over half a century now.
In the 69th period of sessions of the United Nations General Assembly, where the resolution presented by Cuba on that criminal act is analyzed, the countries that are members of that bloc condemned the U.S. measures that have cost the island substantial material and human losses.
On behalf of the 134 members of the Group of the 77 plus China, Sasha Llorenti, Permanent Representative of Bolivia at the United Nations, expressed that with this attitude towards Cuba the U.S. government commits an open violation of the principles of the U.N. Charter.
Public health is undermined by the blockade, as well as the development of culture, sports, banking, foreign trade and investment, and almost all commercial relations with other countries, he said.
In addition, he added, international cooperation given and received by the Cuban people is hit hardly by the blockade, and there are substantial costs for strategic sectors of the island's economy, such as construction, tourism, industry, communications, la energy, mining and transport.
The Group of 77 plus China openly opposed the threat the blockade presupposes to the island's freedom of trade and self-determination, and asked the rest of the countries of the community to support the resolution presented by Cuba.
He also urged the international community to adopt urgent and efficient measures to prevent the implementation of coercive and unilateral economic and measures against developing nations.
LLorenti also denounced the persecution of Cuba's international financial transactions abroad, which has been aggravated by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) over the last few years, and condemned the inclusion of Cuba on the list of countries sponsoring terrorism, recently published by that government.
