HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 20 (acn) The Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) reiterated on Monday in this capital the need to join efforts and resources to prevent the transmission of Ebola in the region.
While addressing on Monday participants in the Extraordinary Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas-People's Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), PAHO Director General Carissa F. Etienne pointed out that to do this it's necessary that the states maintain communication on the matter.
She pointed out that it's fundamental that all actions carried out meet the international regulations requested in regulatory frameworks to protect people working in the fight against the disease.
The PAHO official explained that Latin America needs to create laboratories, diagnostic centers and attention with the necessary standards for patients.
Etienne thanked Cuba for its prompt response to organize this meeting following a suggestion by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
The nations that are members of the regional mechanism, met at the Protocol Hall of Cubanacan, reviewed strategies and steps aimed at preventing Ebola, an epidemic that has already killed over 4,000 people in Western Africa.
Attending the meeting were representatives of Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, Ecuador, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia, all of them members of the ALBA-TCP.
Also taking part in the meeting were Grenada and Saint Kitts and Nevis, two nations that have already received approval in the bloc.
