HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 18 (acn) As a reward for his most recent results, Cuban IM Carlos Albornoz was invited to the Lausanne Young Masters, in Switzerland, one of the highlights of the international chess calendar each year.
The contest will take place next February and Albornoz, who is only 18, will face there nine other young players, including Russian Nikita Petrov, who amounts (2 585 Elo points, and German Dennis Wagner (2 579).
It will be a 9-round Swiss system tournament and the Cuban player will be the third seed of the strong event.
The other invited players are the locals Noel Studer (2 494), Oliver Kurmann (2 444), Aurelio Colmenares (2 341) and Theo Stijve (2 339), in adittion to German Luis Engel (2 472), Austrian Dominik Horvath (2 417) and French Quentin Burri (2 409).
Cuba had presence before in these tournaments with Lazaro Bruzon, who was invited after he became junior world champion in 2000.
