HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 14 (acn) Cuban triple jumper Jordan Diaz, champion of the recently concluded Youth Olympic Games, appears among the five finalists for the 2018 Male Rising Star Award to be granted by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
The IAAF will announce the winner in its World Gala next December 4, although for the young Cuban athlete it is already a great recognition to be among the candidates for that prize.
Monarch in the Youth Olympics based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, last October, Diaz made history in that type of contests when scoring 17.14 meters, with which he broke the Olympic record of 16.37m set by his compatriot Radames Fabar in Singapore 2010.
Winner of the gold medal in the U20 World Championships hosted by Tampere, Finland, last July, Diaz demonstrated this year his excellent conditions to reign at the highest level in the triple jump.
In addition, in the current season he earned the silver medal in the Central American and Caribbean Games of Barranquilla, Colombia, last August, where he was only surpassed by another Cuban, Cristian Napoles.
As if that were not enough, he scored more than 10 records over 17 meters, including the one of 17.41 achieved in May which is the national junior record.
These performances allowed him being elected a few days ago as best junior athlete of 2018 by the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletics Confederation (NACAC).
The other athletes nominated to the 2018 IAAF Male Rising Star Award are Ethiopian Selemon Barega, Swedish Armand Duplantis, Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto, according to JIT sports publication.
