HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 26 (acn) Cubans Ismael Borrero, Luis Orta and Daniel Gregorich made their debut today in the Greco-Roman style event of the 2018 World Wrestling Championships running in Budapest, Hungary, until next Sunday.
The three of them were champions in the Central American and Caribbean Games of Barranquilla, concluded last August, and debuted with win to then lose in the subsequent round.
According to the official website of the tournament, Orta (60 kilograms) was bye in the round-of-32 to then beat 8-4 Uzbek Firuz Tukhtaev, but in quarterfinals he was defeated 1-7 by Serbian Kristjian Fris, 2017 European champion in the 59kg division.
Meanwhile, Borrero (67), Rio 2016 Olympic monarch and Las Vegas 2015 world champion, won 6-1 over Uzbek Mirzobek Rakhmatov, but surprise emerged in the round of 16 when he lost 6-11 to the unknown Kazakh Meirzhan Shermakhanbet.
Finally, Gregorich (87) defeated 10-2 Bulgarian Yoan Dimitrov but then yielded 0-9 to Russian Bekkhan Ozdoev, current European runner-up.
The three Cuban wrestlers are still in contention as their three victimizers advanced to semifinals and if winning will drag them to the repechage, where they could fight for bronze medals.
The Caribbean island will also be represented in this tough competition by Ariel Fiz (77) and Oscar Pino (130), the latter was universal bronze medalist last year in Paris, and they will both make their debut tomorrow.
So far, Cuba accumulates in the 2018 World Wrestling Championships a title won by Yowlys Bonne (61) and three bronze medals achieved by Alejandro Valdes (65), Maren (70) and the woman Montero (68), all in the freestyle event, thus ranking eighth in the medal table behind Japan (5-1-4), United States (4-2-5), Russia (4-1-2), China (1-1-4), Georgia (1-1-2), Canada (1-1-2), Bulgaria (1-1-0) and ahead of Ukraine (1-0-2) and Finland (1-0-0), just to mention the top 10.
