HAVANA, Cuba, May 28 (acn) Cuban women athletes Yorgelis Rodriguez and Yarisley Silva starred great performances this weekend in distant points of the world.
Rodriguez, indoor world bronze medalist a few months ago and who is only 23, ratified herself as one of the best heptalonists globally when finishing second at the meeting of Götzis, Austria, and set a national record by scoring 6.742 points, thus surpassing by 148 units her previous amount achieved a year ago in the universal contest of London, where she ranked fourth.
The gold medal went to Belgian Olympic and world monarch Naffissatou Thiam, who scored 6.802 points, universal season best, while American Erica Bougard ranked third setting a personal best of 6.725 units.
The other good news for Cuban athletics came from Mexico City where pole vaulter Silva won the 5th International Urban Meeting by reaching 4.70 meters.
With that jump she set the competition record and also a world season best.
Americans Kristen Hixson and Annie Rhodes finished second and third, in that order.
Silva´s personal best this year was of 4.60m, and she will attend next Thursday the Diamond League meeting of Rome, along with her teammates Denia Caballero (women´s discus throw) and men long jumpers Juan Miguel Echevarria and Maikel Masso.
In the Aztec capital, the also Cuban pole vaulter (men´s event) Lazaro Borges reappeared and ranked third with 5.30 meters.
