HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 7 (acn) Five Cuban athletes will compete today in the IAAF World Championships London 2017, which runs in England until August 13, and where the Caribbean island already earned a bronze medal.
In the fourth competitive day of that major contest, Andy Diaz, Lazaro Martinez and Cristian Napoles will debut in the qualifying phase of the men´s triple jump event.
Diaz, with 17.40 meters, owns the best performance achieved by the three of them this season, followed by Napoles (17.27) and Martinez (17.07).
Also today, Roxana Gomez (women´s 400m) will run in the semifinals after recording 51.98 seconds in the preliminary stage.
The other Cuban athlete competing today will be Zurian Hechavarria, who will be involved in the first qualifying heat of the women´s 400 m hurdles.
So far, Cuba has won a bronze medal in this major tournament through Yarisley Silva (women´s pole vault).
Silva, Beijing 2015 global monarch, finished third tied with Venezuelan Robeilys Peinado, both with record of 4.65 meters.
In other outstanding Cuban performances, Yorgelis Rodriguez ranked fourth in the heptathlon setting a national record of 6,594 points and Maykel Masso finished fifth in the men´s long jump event.
Two years ago, in China, Cuba ranked tenth in the standings with one silver and two gold medals.
