HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 6 (acn) The next stop of the Diamond League scheduled for next Thursday in Rome will be time to evaluate Cuban athletes who are training for the next world championship in August, in the city of London.
Women Yarisley Silva (pole vault) and Liadagmis Povea (triple jump) are confirmed for this fourth stage of the circuit, although Cuba could increase its presence through men Dayron Robles (short hurdles) and sprinter Roberto Skyers, who both appear as substitutes so far.
For Silva, this will be her second performance in the current campaign, as in early May she ranked third in the meeting of Doha, Qatar, with record of 4.65 meters; while Povea will make her season debut.
By the way, it will be interesting to see if Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas, who recently set the season best in 14.96 meters, two centimeters less than what she scored when she became Olympic runner-up Rio 2016, attends this contest.
The men´s triple jump event also made headlines a few days ago, when Americans Christian Taylor and Will Claye surpassed 18 meters in the Eugene meeeting. The first one won with 18.11 and the latter escorted him with 18.05.
Returning to Cuba and its subsequent appearances, next June 13, long jumper Maikel Masso and Skyers are expected to compete in Turkus, Finland.
A day later, Povea, Robles and Rose Mary Almanza (women´s 800m) will compete in the Spanish city of Huelva; while on June 15, Silva and discus throwers Denia Caballero and Yaime Perez will attend the fifth stop of the Diamond League in Oslo, Norway.
Caballero finished third at the Shanghai stop with 65.76 meters, but last Saturday she ranked fourth at Schönebeck, Germany, with discreet record of 62.30 meters.
