HAVANA, Cuba, May 29 (acn) Cuban Yuri Gonzalez appears as leader of the San Salvador Zonal 2.3 chess, tournament, which grants tickets to the World Cup, after accumulating 1.5 points on his two Sunday games.
Gonzalez defeated Costa Rican Sergio Duran in the morning and at night signed peace with his compatriot Lazaro Bruzon to total 4.5 units in five outings.
The aforementioned Duran, who after losing to Gonzalez beat Nicaraguan Rene Lacayo; Colombians Camilo Ríos and Joshua Ruiz, and Cuban Bruzon, all rank second in that order by tiebreaker.
The latter, who is the second seed of the contest, drew in his first match of the day with Rios.
The other Cuban in competition, Roberto Carlos Sanchez, had a disastrous performance in this round as he only got half a point in the two games and with only 2.5 units fell to the 31st seat among the 50 contenders.
This tournament has nine rounds; it ends next Wednesday, and grants two tickets to the WC.
