HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 21 (acn) Cuban Lázaro Bruzón won for the fifth time the Carlos Torre Memorial Chess Tournament by retaining a crown that is his since 2013 after previously conquered it in 2005.
His performance in the Mexican city of Merida allowed him to climb from the third to the second seat of Cuba's ranking to be updated in January.
In the last round, Bruzón (2,626 Elo units) drew with Russian Alexander Shimanov (2 633) to complete 7.5 points of possible nine, unassailable for the other 140 contestants in the 28th edition of this traditional contest.
Six wins and three draws summed up the work of the Caribbean player, earning thus 16.7 Elo points, valid to resume his habitual condition of main follower of Leinier Domínguez (2 732).
His good performance was combined with the one by Yuniesky Quesada (2 632), who finished 15th with six units and lost 2.2 units that will make him fall from the second to the third spot of the Cuban ranking.
According to the digital site www.chess-results.com, Bruzón was escorted by Shimanov, who totaled seven points and better tiebreaker than Peruvian Deivy Vera (2 516).
The best other performances of Cuba, second country most represented after the host, was in charge of Ermes Espinosa (2 499) who ranked eighth with 6.5 points and a considerable gain of 20.9 Elo units.
Espinosa achieved five wins, three draws and was only defeated by American Alexander Onischuk (2 668), first seed of the contest who finished fifth with 6.5 points.
Lelys Martínez (2 512) and Isán Ortiz (2,568) were the Cuban players with that same amount, but their tiebreakers placed them 13 th and 14th, in that order.
Their compatriot Lisandra Ordaz (2 370) became the woman with most outstanding performance after ranking 31st with 5.5 units, actions that included a remarkable win over Indian Sahai Grover (2 469) and a meritorious draw with Ukrainian Andrey Baryshpolets (2 584).
