MATANZAS, Cuba, Dec 9 (acn) Cuban swimmer Elisbet Gámez, considered the leading figure of this sport in the Caribbean country, will compete today at the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), held since yesterday in Windsor, Canada.
Gámez, 19, will return to the waters of the WFCU Center in the women´s 400 meters freestyle, after finishing 30th in the 200 meters of the same style, during the first day of competitions.
The athlete from the eastern province of Guantanamo exclusively told ACN she feels able to have a positive performance in the event, which includes renowned athletes such as Italian Federica Pellegrini and American Leah Smith.
Cuba made its debut on Tuesday with a two national records to the account of Lazaro Vergara and Luis Vega in the men´s 200 meters butterfly and the men´s individual medley at equal distance, respectively.
With six gold, one silver and two bronze medals, Cuba ranks 18th by nations in the event's historical standings, which this year is attended by more than 900 swimmers from 160 countries
