HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 9 (acn) Cuban Reineris Salas will leave tonight for Minsk, Belarus, to attend 1st Pahlavani wrestling world championship which starts on November 12th in that European nation.
The young wrestler and his instructor, Wilber Sánchez, Barcelona 92 Olympic bronze medalist in Greco-Roman style (48 kg), announced that they would represent Cuba in this new format of competition.
Pahlavani is a dynamic, fast and explosive wrestling. Athletes compete in six divisions, from 60kg and increasing from 10 to 10. There are two fundamental differences with the classic style: you can only hold your opponent by the belt, by the short or below it, which is longer. In addition, non of the contenders can pass their back on the mattress, because they would lose automatically.
Salas, who will fight in the 100 kg division, said since last year he weighs 97 kg overlooking the unprecedented competition of this month.
"I will try to adapt myself during the bouts, but I do not rule out a medal. I'm going to fight against any rival, although it is very unlikely that I have faced one of them before, because I have very little time in this weight, "he added.
Pahlavani Wrestling arose in ancient Persia and it is said to have been practiced by mythological heroes in great battles. It combines martial arts and freestyle wrestling techniques. It is said to be a strength training with high spiritual value.
