MATANZAS, Cuba, Oct 7 (acn) Cuban cyclist Marlies Mejías, winner of the silver medal in the individual pursuit, will try to add another medal in the omnium event during the Pan American Track Cycling Championship, which started last Wednesday in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
Mejias, champion of that event during the continental cycling competition in 2011, 2012, 2013, told ACN that despite not being at the top of her potential she retains the fighting spirit that characterizes Cuban athletes.
I came to this tournament with a more than enough desire to succeed, said Mejias, 23, who finished seventh in that same event during the 2016 Summer Olympics.
On Wednesday , Mejias improved her personal best with a time of 3:28,930 minutes, valid for the second position and only behind U.S. cyclist Kelly Catlin (2:54,017), winner of the gold medal.
On the other hand, on Thursday, Cuban Arlenis Sierra won a bronze medal in the women's scratch, following Mexican Yarely Salazar and Chilean Paola Munoz, in that order, while the also Cuban Iraida Garcia finished eighth in that same event.
Cuba treasures in such events a large booty of 36 gold, 18 silver and 17 bronze medals, surpassed only by Colombia (52-39-28) and ahead of cycling powers like the United States (19-14-25) and Canada (14-16-8), third and fourth places in that order.
