HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 13 (acn) In a game of life or death for both teams, Cuba will face Thailand today in their second match of Group B in the World Futsal Championship based in Medellin, Colombia.
On Saturday, Cubans lost on their debut 1-7 to Egypt, African runners-up, while Thailand was beaten 2-0 by Russia, reigning European monarch and one of the teams considered favorite to reach the awards podium.
The first two squads in each group will get tickets for the next phase, so both sides are almost forced to win, and not only to draw.
It is worth mentioning that a draw would affect much more to Cuba, which would finish the group stage facing Russia, far superior in technical and tactical level, while the Asian side would have options against the Africans.
The so-called "Warrior Elephants' attend their fifth consecutive world cup and their major figure is the winger-pivot Chonburi Blue, leading scorer in the Asian qualifiers for this tournament.
Meanwhile, Cubans will try to take to the court everything they learned after 13 friendly matches they underwent during the months of July and August against national teams and clubs in Chile, Guatemala and Argentina.
Cuba attended four consecutive World Futsal Championships: Spain 1996, Guatemala 2000, Chinese Taipei 2004 and Brazil 2008, but did not qualify to Thailand 2012.
