HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 7 (acn) Cuban teams of both sexes lost in their respective matches corresponding to the fifth round of the World Chess Olympiad, based in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan.
For the second consecutive day the men´s squad lost, this time to the less demanding side of Canada, with a score of 1-3, outcome which made it to descend from 16th to 43rd seat, with the same six units achieved in its three initial presentations, when it even ranked on top positions in the standings.
Only GM Leinier Dominguez did his homework by defeating on first board Evgeny Bareev, while the rest of his three teammates lost, according to the website of the contest.
Thus, the also GMs Lazaro Bruzon, Isan Ortiz and Yuri Gonzalez were beaten by Anton Kovalyov, Eric Hansen and LeSiege, respectivley
The other negative note came through the women's team which lost 0-4 to Poland, result that relegated them from spot 23rd to 46th in the overall standings, also with six points after three wins and two losses.
Today, Cuban women´s side will rival Denmark, which appears 41st, while the men´s squad will face Turkmenistan, which ranks 70th in the standings.
