Cuban Athlete Yarisley Silva Ends 7th in Rio

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 20 (acn) Cuban pole-vaulter Yarisley Silva finished seventh at the 31st Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, after jumping only 4.60 meters (m).

She tried three times to jump the 4.70m needed but she was left without possibilities of a medal, since she began the test with a discreet mark of 4.50m.
Silva, 29, silver medal winner in the London 2012 edition of the Games and world champion, had qualified second in Group B to the finals with 4.60 meters, which made it possible for her to be among the 12 pole-vaulters aspiring to medals.
The Cuban athlete obtained her best record of the year in the stage of the Diamond League held in Birmingham, England, with 4.84 m, a result that placed her fourth in the season's ranking.
Greek Ekaterini Stefanidi masterfully dominated the event with 4.85 meters, while U.S. athlete Sandi Morris won the silver medal and Eliza McCartney, of New Zealand, the bronze medal.
Surprisingly, local Fabian Murer and Greek Nikoleta Kyriakopoulou, both favorites to be medal winners, were not present in the finals.
