HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 18 (ACN) The three Cuban rowers who will compete in the 2021 Cali Junior Pan American Games will finish their training in the José Smith Comas canal, in the province of Artemisa.
Angel Luis Garcia, president of the National Federation of this sport, told ACN that their previous training sessions in the bay of the city of Cienfuegos were very fruitful and ratified that Cuba will be in the Games—to be held from November 25 to December 5—will be single sculler Carlos Adrían Ajete and Marelis González and Rayma Ortiz in the coxless pair competition.
Ajete replaced Angel Fournier, who resigned from the team shortly before the 2020-21 Olympic Games, and is currently Cuba's best single sculler. However, he failed to get the Tokyo ticket when he lost his paddling rhythm after stumbling on one of the buoys in the finals of the Americas qualifiers held in Rio de Janeiro. He finished second in the coxless fours (4x) and third in the coxed eights (8+) in the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru.
Marelis and Rayma are less experienced but expected to perform well. Marelis, the national champion, finished eighth place in the 2018 III Youth Olympic Games in Argentina and won a silver medal in the quadruple sculls (4x) in the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima, where she rowed with Rayma, Aimeé Hernández and Yariulvis Cobas.
The rowing tournament will be held on Lake Calima, in the department of Valle del Cauca, some 100 kilometers from Cali, Colombia, from December 1 to 4.
