HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 1 (ACN) Cuban swimmer Lorenzo Pérez Escalona will try today to make it to the 400 m final for the first time in the Tokyo Paralympics after his failed attempts in the 50 m and 100 m events.
In his most recent presentation, Perez was left out of the final of the 100 m freestyle for S6 class, which he won in Rio 2016 with 1:04.70 minutes.
Perez Escalona, who was the standard-bearer of the Cuban delegation together with runner Omara Durand, set the ninth best time of the qualifying heat (1:08.62), just one hundredth of a second behind the eighth classified, the Chinese Jingang Wang (1:08.61).
As a freestyle specialist, he is a regular in the S 6 class, in a sport in which the categories from S 1 to S 10 are for physical-motor disabilities and from S 11 to S 13 for the visually impaired. The lower the scale number, the greater the limitation.
