HOLGUÍN, Cuba, May 26 (ACN) Being in the red zone every day, coping with a disease like COVID-19 which spares no race or gender, is a challenge and a profound commitment for health workers wherever they are, but it is a great honor and a responsibility as Cuba offers solidarity anywhere in the world.
These words come from Mariela Leticia Rodriguez, a nurse from the province of Holguín who for almost a year has been fighting the pandemic as a member of the Henry Reeve Medical Brigade in Kuwait.
Rodriguez, who graduated in 1991, said that despite the language, climate and cultural barriers, working relations in Kuwait are based on cooperation and mutual respect among professionals from India, Pakistan, Egypt and Bangladesh.
About her work in a field hospital for patients from around the region, the specialist claimed that nothing compares to helping save lives and witnessing the favorable evolution of the ill.
“Cuban doctors have earned the respect, trust and admiration of the patients, many of whom request their care. It’s the best reward after 12-hour shifts in the intensive care units.”
Kuwait is Mariela's third experience as an internationalist. She has been in Venezuela and Bolivia as an obstetrics nurse and head of medical mission.
The province of Holguin has more than 200 nurses in the Henry Reeve brigade who have fought the virus in some 25 countries since the appearance of the first cases in 2020. They have also supported provinces with a high rate of COVID-19 infection rate, such as Havana.
