Havana, Cuba, Mar 21 (acn) The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) will look for a common position in face of economic and migratory measures recently adopted by the US government.
Cuba's Deputy Foreign Minister, Abelardo Moreno, stated that the 21st Meeting of National Coordinators –to be held in El Salvador- will look for ways for the CELAC member nations to find a common position and defend the region's interests before the recent actions and declarations made by the US government.
The Cuban diplomat added that there will be a debate on a very important document called Punteo for Discussion for a possible common position of CELAC members nations in response to US policies.
Moreno added that whether the document is approved or not, it is relevant that a discussion will be initiated as a region that was also discussed at the ministerial meeting of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) and CARICOM recently held in Havana.
Before the economic and migratory decisions, that affects the 33 Latin American and Caribbean nations, the San Salvador meeting will be important if you take into account that CELAC is a political mechanism towards a common position whose main goal is to maintain unity among diversity.
An important challenge ahead is how we will react before actions of force in the region that affect our vital interests, said the Deputy Foreign Minister.
Another of the issues agreed on will be the search for a rotation mechanism of the pro tempore presidency, which has provoked discussion for the last three years with two candidates currently disputing 2018.
A third aspect which will be analyzed is the creation of what some people call CELAC support mechanism that will allow to do follow ups to agreements that are adopted and has a permanent character and at the same time preserve the historic memory of the regional institution, said Moreno.
In El Salvador –current president of CELAC- preparations are underway to hold the CELAC-European Union Summit next October.
Moreno pointed out that debates will begin on the Political Declaration for the CELAC-European Union meeting and the non-compliance of the Action Plan will be taken into account, which was approved in the previous Brussels Summit some years ago.
The diplomat pointed out that CELAC, with five years of history as a regional mechanism, "is more valid than ever because it is necessary for Latin American and Caribbean nations to exercise unity among diversity".
He emphasized that the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as Zone of Peace –signed in 2014 in Havana- is one of the transcendental text approved as the Presidents of all of the regional nations signed it and is the only text of CELAC that has been signed as such.

The Proclamation is not only important for the development of harmonic relations within our region, but it is also to avoid conflicts, promote that differences are solved through dialog and negotiations, strengthen nuclear disarmament in Latin America, which was consolidated through the Tlatelolco Treaty. The Proclamation calls on the international community to respect its ties with Latin America and the Caribbean, concluded Abelardo Moreno.
