HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 25 (acn) The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, arrived in Cuba on Tuesday for an official visit, with which he hopes to strengthen economic and political relations between the two countries.
In statements to the press, the head of state highlighted the political importance of his visit, the first of a Portuguese statesman to the island and the importance from the economic point of view, since he is accompanied by a large business delegation.
With regard to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States, the dignitary said that his country's Parliament has unanimously ratified its condemnation to the siege that dates back to over fifty years.
Upon his arrival at the capital's Jose Marti International Airport, the Portuguese head of state was received by Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra and Portugal's ambassador to Cuba, Luis Faro Ramos.
As part of his agenda on the island until October 27, Rebelo de Sousa will be received by Army General Raul Castro, President of the councils of State and Ministers, with whom he will hold official talks.
Also in the context of his visit, the Cuba-Portugal forum to explore business opportunities in both nations will take place.
