HAVANA, Cuba, May 19 (acn) The mayor of Mobile City, in the US state of Alabama, William Sandy Stimpson stressed in Havana the good opportunities for exchange with Cuba and called for the lifting of restrictions that hinder bilateral relations.
Stimpson, who is visiting Cuba with a delegation from his city, favored the visits here by more US citizens so that they can see Cuban reality by themselves.
During a visit to the Special Development Zone at the western Mariel Harbor, the visitors stressed the potential existing there to further increase bilateral links between the Cuban project and the Mobile harbor.
The US delegation, which includes business people and local officials, are scheduled to meet with academics at the University of Havana and the Culture Ministry on Thursday.
Mobile is the main port in Alabama and one of the exits for exports from Southern United States through the Gulf of Mexico. The State of Alabama pioneered trade with Cuba since this relationship was opened ten years ago. The US region is a major provider of frozen chicken for Cuba.
However, the Mobile entrepreneurial community is interested in diversifying their Cuba offer and import Cuban products, but this is still banned by the over-50-year US economic, commercial and financial blockade of the island nation.
