SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Jan 21 (acn) Concerns about agricultural marketing and contracting and its improvement stand out among the approaches of the farmers of the province of Santiago de Cuba in the assemblies of the 11th Congress of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP by its Spanish acronym).
In the process preceding the event, scheduled from next May 15 to 17 in Havana, the producers reiterate the little time they have to agree food prices, which limits the figure to produce and in turn affects payment to farmer and the amount devoted to population consumption.
Santiago Martinez, a member of ANAP Provincial Bureau, said they have conducted 280 meetings from the 312 planned in Agricultural Production and Credits and Services Cooperatives (CPA and CCS by its Spanish acronym respectively), mainly dedicated to harvest of tubers, beans, corn, fruit, coffee, sugar cane and livestock.
In mountainous areas, the members of the coffee structures expressed that some supplies arrive late and must be acquired at high prices, sometimes by second hand, an approach with which grain producers, mainly corn, coincide.
The obstacles to the delivery of land in usufruct, more agility and responsiveness to bank loans and the need for increased vigilance including the competent authorities and rural brigades are among the topics of discussion of agricultural workers.
They have also commented on the need to increase sugarcane areas and bring them closer to sugar mills and also the inner working of cooperatives.
Luis Vinet, ANAP president in the territory, said the board of the cooperatives, including the president, vice president, ideological organizer, economic head and other non-professional members are selected by voting at each assembly.
