Sugar harvest kicks off in eastern Cuba

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Dec 22 (ACN) The current sugar harvest in the province of Santiago de Cuba began with the Dos Ríos Agroindustrial Sugar Enterprise, preceded by a ceremony in which banners were given to the mechanized cutting workers’ brigades.

Scheduled to last until April 30, 2022, this harvest relies on the commitment of cooperative farmers and workers to reach the production target despite the shortage of resources and the old technology they have in place.

The Dos Rios sugar mill carried out the required tests and became active on December 15 under a new structure that streamlines the socioeconomic strategy for the revival of the sugar cane program, said Estrella Pino, deputy director of the provincial sugar enterprise (AzCuba).

“We have four mills in the region, and two of them will be engaged in the harvest. They all aim to increase the production of sugar and its derivatives, strengthen the role of the socialist state enterprise and the autonomy of the municipalities,” she remarked.

Luis Blanco, director of the province’s largest sugar enterprise, pointed out in turn that they looked for local solutions and alternatives to finish repair and maintenance work and cover all positions with qualified workers, who will count on the agricultural machinery they need to have a more efficient harvest.

Unity, discipline and duty is the challenge facing those who take to the fields before sunup to ensure the highest possible yields of tons of sugar cane per hectare, always without neglecting the production of food for the family, the local population and themselves.
