HAVANA, Cuba, May 14 (acn) Cuba's First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel conferred in this capital on Friday the Friendship Medal upon the Secretary General of the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC), Christopher Ferguson.
The award, given by the Cuban Council of State, acknowledges the special relationship of love and solidarity maintained by Ferguson with the Cuban people and his close work with the churches of the island, individually and as a representative of international religious organizations.
Ferguson accompanied for decades the Cuban battles for self-determination, and especially for the lifting of the U.S. blockade and the return of the territory of Guantanamo illegally occupied by that northern power.
After thanking the gesture of the Cuban government, Ferguson told Prensa Latina that the Caribbean island is an example of strength and a sign of hope for Latin America and the world.
The strongest power is that of love and solidarity, and this medal, which I receive on behalf of my organization, is a sign of the patriotic values, and the values of peace and justice that we share, he pointed out.
The World Communion of Reformed Churches held on May 8-13 in Havana a working meeting prior to its general assembly, which will be held in Germany next year.
That international religious association is composed of 80 million Christians in more than 200 Congregational, Presbyterian, Reformed, United, Unified, and Waldensian churches, with a presence in over 100 countries.
