HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 19 (acn) Yesterday was a sad day for Cuban baseball due to the decease of two glories of this sport in the Caribbean island: ace pitcher Jesus Guerra and slugger Romelio Martinez.
Guerra, Pinar del Rio, born in1948 died in Havana after fighting a prolonged illness; participated in 13 Cuban National Series, in which he archived 114 wins and 84 losses, completed 117 games, with 33 shutouts and had ERA of 2.36 and also had a 22-0 balance with the Cuban national team.
After retirement he became an outstanding professor, both at domestic and foreign level, and provided his wide knowledge to star Cuban pitchers such as Pedro Luis Lazo, Jose Contreras, Norge Luis Vera, Ormari Romero, just to mention a few of them.
Meanwhile, OF and DH Martinez, Bejucal, born in 1965; died in Havana due to a heart attack; was considered the slugger with the biggest power in Cuba, played in 15 national series where he blasted 370 homers, 4th in the ranking, and still owns the highest at bat and RBI per homerun (AB, RBI/HR) ratio,12.61, in Cuba.
After retirement from the national tournaments, he went to play abroad in Colombia, Nicaragua, Holland, Japan, the DR and Mexico with outstanding performances and also provided technical assistance in Italy from 2001 to 2003. He also served as provincial baseball commissioner in the Mayabeque province.
