Cuban conference discusses digital literacy of senior citizens

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 11 (ACN) The level of ICT use and access and digital literacy were the main topics addressed on the third day of the 1st Workshop on Education for Youth and Adults, held in Havana.

Dr. Ania Hernández, professor at the University of Havana, said that the elderly are often at a disadvantage in technological terms, a fact in urgent need of consideration in a country like Cuba, where 24.4% of the population is over 60 years old, in order to design user-friendly educational programs for this age group.

Despite the increasing use of the Internet and mobile telephony in recent years, Cuba does not have age-based statistics that truly reveal the status of the digital divide, which slows down the design of the necessary policies to bridge the gap.

Teresa Orosa, chair of the Department of the Elderly, described what they do in this regard to improve old people’s skills, including digital inclusion projects, technological training, and customized education programs.

The 1st National Workshop on Education for Youth and Adults dedicated three days to approach topics such as innovation in teaching, sex education, ICT use in the teaching process, and the professional training of educators.
