CIENFUEGOS, Cuba, Sep 17 (ACN) A new 400-hectare (ha) rice farm will be opened in the municipality of Abreus, in order to provide food self-sufficiency in that locality, considered one of the most productive in the central province of Cienfuegos.
More than a hundred farmers, who live in the settlements of Guasimal and Siguatey, will assume the cultivation of rice in the lands they recently received and are now clearing of marabu.
Yadira Perez Negrin, first secretary of the Party in Abreus, told the Cuban News Agency that they have already secured resources such as fuel and fertilizer to attend to these crops.
She said that next October 2nd they will contract these productions, which are framed within the cold season sowings.
She indicated that the agricultural sector, the government and the Party of that municipality have proposed to achieve self-sufficiency of the cereal next year, for a population estimated at more than 30,700 inhabitants.
Abreus will plant 700 ha of beans in the Horquita agricultural company and 225 ha more in the cooperative sector during the current cold season.
In addition, 350 ha of potatoes will be planted in that agricultural entity, while in mountain areas of the municipality of Cumanayagua, 12 ha of this tuber are currently being planted, according to Raudel Rubio Rodriguez, delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture in Cienfuegos.
