HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 1 (ACN) Agencies of the United Nations System (UNS by its Spanish acronym) contribute to the progress and encouraging results of Cuba's Maternal and Infant Care Program (PAMI by its Spanish acronym), a Public Health official acknowledged today in Havana, before representatives of the UN and the local media.
During a visit to the Eusebio Hernandez Obstetric and Gynecology Hospital, Dr. Catherine Chibas Perez, head of the National Maternal and Infant Department, highlighted the contribution of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO).
In line with the UNS Cooperation Framework for Sustainable Development 2020-2025, these representations join us in multiple activities, analyze with us our priorities and difficulties, and in the face of a disaster situation, they come quickly, the expert said.
She pointed out that although each agency has its own areas of work, together in 2023 they contributed to the updating of the PAMI with advice and financing of workshops to achieve an optimal result, and to capacity building, technical assistance, knowledge management and the acquisition of supplies, equipment and medicines.
In turn, they supported the prevention of maternal morbidity and mortality by providing the necessary means for training pregnant women, and in disaster situations, they offered medicine kits, hygiene kits and other medical supplies.
During their visit to the Eusebio Hernandez Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, the UNS representatives, led by Francisco Pichon, its resident coordinator in Cuba, toured the wards and talked with managers, specialists, doctors, nurses and patients.
The high-ranking official said that the report on the results of the United Nations System in Cuba, corresponding to 2023 and recently published, includes the contributions of its agencies, funds and programs to support the country's sustainable development.
