Cuba marks fifth anniversary of monument to solidarity with Africa

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 29 (ACN) The Park of the African Heroes celebrates today its first five years of existence after its opening this very day of 2019 in the municipality of Playa, in Havana, where it is considered one more evidence of the proverbial sense of solidarity and national internationalism.

The initiative of its creation corresponded to the Cuban-African Friendship Society and it is the only one of its kind in the world to immortalize images of some of the guides who contributed decisively to the fight against colonialism and to the unity of Africa.

So far, the heroes honored are Antonio Agostinho Neto (Angola), Oliver Tambo (South Africa), Eduardo Mondlane and Samora Machel (Mozambique), Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana), Emir Abdel Kader (Algeria), Gamal Abdel Nasser (Egypt) and Modibo Keita (Mali).

In addition, Omar al-Mukhtar (Libya), Amilcar Cabral (Guinea Bissau), Marien Ngouabi (Republic of Congo), Ahmed Sékou Touré (Guinea), Laurent-Désiré Kabila and Patricio Lumumba (Democratic Republic of Congo), and Seretse Khama (Botswana).

The initial figure corresponded to that of Antonio Agostinho Neto (1922-1979), first president of the People's Republic of Angola, and João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço constituted the head of state of that country in the African region who most recently paid tribute to Neto during his official visit to Cuba in July 2019.

In April 2019 and in the municipality of Playa itself, they also opened the Park of the Caribbean Heroes as a tribute of the Cuban people to the fighters against colonialism and for the independence of the countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
