Canned food in Cuban province replaces input imports

CIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba, Feb 19 (ACN) The canning industry of the central province of Ciego de Avila included onion pulp in its product portfolio, a product that substitutes imports of inputs needed to make different sauces.

Noemi Iglesias Falcon, director of the Ciego de Avila Vegetable and Canning Company, told the Cuban News Agency that the collective made its first venture into this line of business and obtained 120 tons, without difficulty, in the Chinese technology line.

Of that total, we saved some 12 tons to be used in the different sauces made by the Majagua and Florencia factories, while from the rest we made onion paste and concentrated onion, which were sold to the population, said the director.

Given the limitations of other items, such as tomatoes, of which the plan to mill in the current campaign is 3,000 tons, and to date the commitments of the farmers are fulfilled, the canners of Ciego de Avila assume what Agriculture gives them, because they have the technology and the necessary labor force.

Preserves and Vegetables in Ciego de Avila stands out in the country for the production of tomato derivatives such as vitanova, tomato soup, 12% tomato, ketchup and juice.

It also stands out for producing light pulps, juices and concentrates of mango, guava and pineapple, and dry spices such as bijol, cumin and allspice.

Its two groups stand out nationally in the manufacture of bell pepper, green tomato and cucumber pickles; frozen chopped yucca; fruit bomb candy; corn tamales and chopped corn; and sauces, mainly sofrito.

The subsidiary in this territory takes advantage of the mango, guava, and papaya seasons to produce mango nectar, jam, guava bars, and papaya candy throughout the year after processing.
