Havana, Feb 14 (ACN) Cubans marked on Wednesday the 50th anniversary of Grenada’s Independence as local officials laid a wreath at the “Parque de los Próceres,” a Havana park paying tribute to Caribbean Heroes.
Grenada’s ambassador to Cuba Glen Benedict Noel stressed Cuba’s example as a guide for his country in the fight for Independence by proving that a united people in struggle can reach the road to freedom.
The Grenadian diplomat thanked Cuba for its unconditional support of his country’s development and recalled 24 internationalist Cuban workers killed in combat during the 1983 invasion of the small Caribbean nation.
The ceremony was attended by Gustavo Veliz, director for Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean at the Cuban Foreign Ministry. Veliz unveiled the wreath at the park accompanied by diplomats and members of the Cuba-Grenada Friendship Group.
Grenada got its independence from Britain on February 7, 1974 after a three-century occupation. Known as the Island of the Spices, Grenada and its surrounding isles, have a population of more than 124 thousand inhabitants.
