WFP supports nutritional and educational sovereignty in Cuban province

JIGUANI, Cuba, Nov 14 (ACN) Some 1,290 inhabitants of this town and other places in the municipality of the same name, in the eastern Cuban province of Granma, are benefiting from the implementation of the "Actúa Diferente! project ("Act Differently!"), promoted by the World Food Program (WFP) of the United Nations.

From the direct link between productive bases and social institutions, healthier, fresher and more nutritious supplies reach five schools, two establishments of the Family Care System (SAF by its Spanish acronym) and a maternity home, explained Beatriz Duani Machado, local coordinator of the initiative financed since 2020 by the International Cooperation Agency of South Korea.

They are inserted, she said, in seven entities of the Agriculture sector, and the actions include training on issues of culinary culture, food sovereignty, health and nutritional education, soil care, seed production, plant health, application of biological means, and development and use of organic fertilizers.

Along with the increase in income and production volumes, the number of women in the cooperatives also increased, and the delivery of tractors and irrigation systems, whose importation was delayed due to restrictions derived from the COVID-19 global pandemic, is still pending, she added.

Duani Machado continued that they received refrigeration equipment to improve the safety and better preservation of food in social institutions, which will also benefit from stoves, pots and other tools to humanize the work of cooking food.

The results and actions of Actua Diferente!, which will remain in force until 2024, contribute to complement the demand for food products for the care of the elderly and pregnant women in the territory.

WFP, with 60 years of collaboration in Cuba, also distributes food modules, powdered milk and micronutrients, fortified cereals and different supplies for people in vulnerable situations in Granma, while monitoring another collaboration project, with an impact on three municipalities and financed by the Russian Federation.
