HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 31 (ACN) The Cuban Society of Mathematics and Computer Science, of the University of Havana (UH), presented today in Havana its most outstanding awards in a ceremony that coincided with the Day of the Mathematician, instituted 15 years ago.
One of them is the Raimundo Reguera Vila Award for the teaching of the subject and corresponded to PhD in Science Miriam Nicado Garcia, rector of the UH, deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power and member of the Council of State and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.
Another was awarded to Professor Valentina Badia Albanés, Engineer in Energy Economics and Master in Economic Sciences; and to Master in Science Ela Ramona Orellana Perez, with the status of Consultant since 2005.
Luis Velazquez Perez Perez, president of the Cuban Academy of Sciences; Wilfredo Gonzalez Vidal, first deputy minister of Communications, and university authorities presented the awards in a ceremony at the Aula Magna of the UH, where Walter Baluja Garcia, minister of Higher Education, sent a congratulatory message.On the same occasion, it was announced that the Pablo Miguel Merino Prize was awarded to Professor Juan Valentin Lorenzo Ginori, Doctor in Technical Sciences at the Marta Abreu Central University of Las Villas, who will receive it in his own province.
Gold, silver and bronze medals and mentions were also awarded to 21 students from Pinar de Rio, Havana, Villa Clara and Sancti Spiritus, winners of the 21st National University Mathematics Olympiad, as well as to 10 winners of the regional competition of the International Collegiate Programming Contest.
The events for the Day of the Mathematician are part of a national program to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the visit of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro to the laboratories of the Cuban Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science and its results during 45 years of its foundation, on October 31, 1978.
