Scientists from the center of Cuba contribute to island's exploration

 CAMAGUEY, Cuba, Aug 1 (ACN) As part of the scientific trip to Cuba, specialists from the Territorial Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment ( CITMA) in Camagüey, and the Center for Environmental Research ( CIMAC), participate in the two-day tour that takes place along the coast of this province.

During the first day, on Monday, the researchers from Camaguey, together with the Naturaleza Secreta team, explored Nuevitas Bay.

In that place they checked the rehabilitation actions of the mangroves of Estero del Gremio and the great value of its marine-coastal ecosystems, as confirmed to the Cuban News Agency Damaris Fernandez Mari, communication specialist of CIMAC.

Nereyda Junco Garzon, technical director of the program, explained to the film crew details about the integrated management of disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change in vulnerable coastal communities.

The group also visited the Cayos Ballenatos fauna refuge, mangrove swamps in Nuevitas Bay and the nature tourism trail in Cayo del Medio.

Today, the second and last day of the tour, the specialists will appreciate the biodiversity and values of the Protected Area of Managed Resources Cayo Sabinal, located in the northern municipality, while the ship Ocean for Youth carries out marine monitoring.

With a crew of 24 people, including 18 specialists from different research centers, the expedition to Cuba began on July 18 at the port of Jucaro, in the south of the central province of Ciego de Avila.

This scientific expedition is aimed at evaluating the current state of coral reef populations in the Cuban archipelago, including the diversity, density and health of such vital ecosystems.
