US journalist to receive visiting professor status at the University of Havana

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 7 (ACN) The category of Visiting Professor at the University of Havana (UH) will be awarded today to DeWayne Wickham, one of the most renowned presidents of the National Association of Black Journalists of the United States (NABJ).

The Scientific Council of the Faculty of Communication of the UH announced to the Cuban News Agency that the decision to distinguish him responds to the requests of the Departments of Social Communication and Journalism, due to the relevance of his work.

It pointed out in its argumentation that Wickham has more than 50 opinion columns on Cuba-U.S. relations, written for the national newspaper USA Today, and also published in dozens of other newspapers and regional media.

As Dean of the School of Global Journalism and Communication at Morgan State University in Baltimore, DeWayne Wickham promoted the signing of a collaboration agreement between that institution and the University of Havana, and has promoted cooperation between both institutions.
No other U.S. journalist has written so systematically and objectively about Cuba in a national media outlet in the U.S.

Wickham became the first in his column in USA Today to urge the then administration of Barack Obama to exchange the Five Heroes of the Republic of Cuba for the alleged contractor Alan Gross, detained on the island, as a way to move forward constructively in the bilateral relationship.

During the years of the administration of former President Donald Trump, DeWayne Wickham's solidarity support was not lacking, through the support of a relationship of respect and professionalism, with donations used in the development of teaching.

At 76 years of age, DeWayne Wickham continues being a paradigm of teacher, researcher and human being, whose life and work are being honored by those who thank him for his contribution, recognize him and honor him.
