SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Jun 9 (ACN) The province's reservoirs are at 57 % of their filling capacity, after reports of heavy rains in this territory, Alexis Mora, coordinator of the Provincial Government's Hydraulic Resources program, told reporters today.
In the last 24 hours, significant records were reported in the Carlos Manuel de Cespedes dams at 69% of their capacity, Protesta de Baragua at 61.2%, Gilbert at 61%, and the lowest in the locality are Parada at 37% and Gota Blanca at 41%, which were in a critical state due to the drought.
The same source mentioned that the reservoirs of the territory can still assimilate 43% of coverage, to guarantee the water supply when there is a period of drought, since up to May 20 there was a record of only 22% of filling.
Yulian Omar, director of the Hydraulic Development Company in Santiago de Cuba, expressed to the Cuban News Agency the 24% increase of Santiago de Cuba's reservoirs, which reverted to 168 million cubic meters of the precious liquid.
In the monitoring carried out, a remarkable saturation of the soils is observed, so the follow-up will be maintained in all the objects of work and technological surveillance, because the rainfall will bring other runoffs in the reservoirs, he said.
According to the Provincial Meteorological Center, this weather situation is due to a trough at high and medium levels of the atmosphere between the central and western areas.
Rains will continue to affect the first half of June, since the models forecast humidity in the region, combined with global warming which will increase its probability.
