Guantanamo, Cuba, May 11 (ACN) Keeping the local construction material program operative in this Eastern province, amidst a tough economic scenario, has been the achievement of a support project by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in coordination with local authorities and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (COSUDE)
During a workshop on Thursday on the construction materials program, Rosendo Mesias UNDP official for Resilience and Risk Reduction, said that the program also generates jobs and introduces technological advancement.
The project aims at helping the country’s post-COVID-19 socio-economic recovery in Guantanamo in tune with the priorities set by the local government in key sectors. As a result, the project has favored mini-industries producing clay bricks, blocks and floor tiles in four municipalities, where they expect to build 320 homes every year.
The UNDP contribution is part of Guantanamo’s Territorial Development Strategy aiming to build homes, improve damaged houses to create resilience and face the impact of future extreme natural phenomena.
Since 2012, the UNDP has contributed to revitalize 89 mini-industries to support local priorities like the production of construction materials.
