Hurricane Season in the North Atlantic will not be very Active

Havana, Cuba, May 11 (ACN) The 2023 hurricane season in the North Atlantic is predicted to be normal and not very active, said Celso Pazos, general director of the Cuban Meteorology Institute.

Pazos made the statement during a videoconference on Thursday in which Civil Defense General Staff (EMNDC) announced upcoming preparations for the People’s “Meteoro” Disaster Risk Reduction exercises this month to prepare for tropical storms and other natural, technological or health phenomena.

The expert estimated the formation of 11 tropical storms, with five of them possibly becoming hurricanes and seven evolving in the Atlantic Ocean, two in the Caribbean sea and two in the Gulf of Mexico.

He said there is 45 to 50 percent chance for the formation and intensification of at least one hurricane in the Caribbean area, and another one entering the zone from the Atlantic Ocean. As to the possibility that Cuba may be hit by a hurricane, the expert said that there is a moderate 35 percent chance.
However, the meteorologist stressed the need to be prepared and on the alert to face any natural phenomenon, even when the hurricane season appears to be a normal one.
